Time was running short she knew as Samuel had told her they didn't have long to get her off duty long enough for her to get better control of the soon to be newborn beast inside her. She felt it there more every day had seen the golden eyes in her subconscious felt the brief brushes of fur in her mind. There were few things that would do well enough to get the time she needed, She had already used most of her maternity leave and some of her vacation time but this needed to be a definite.
So for that reason, she was currently doing some work with the locals on a what was meant to be easy but potentially delicate suspected paranormal case. Light duty to get back into the swing of things Bash had said. She was trying not to be distracted by every new smell or sound that before she wouldn't have heard or smelled. One of the uni's was gassy and had curry for lunch it wasn't pleasant to say the least. Everything in her wanted to scrunch her nose and tell him to stop, but then that was not an option.
This was harder then she thought it would be, taking deep breaths through her nose but not over her mouth because that would be worse shed taste it all. It was that moment of thought that had her get knocked on her butt hard when the suspect they had been trying to corner busted out of a doorway around a corner that the others had walked past and she bit down on the snarl and urge to chase him down hard and fast. Getting up with a sigh as the others gave chase and doing half effort to keep up and not pass them all. Anger tho it was simmering.

Branko Kovačević was three time city champ in the Saints game underground fighting circuit. It was a round robin any fall up to and including death tournament of the best underground fighters in each city. He was also the co leader of the Serbian outfit. It required no small amount of negotiating to have him go along with Samuels plan. The reward to him would be his cancer stricken brother would be infected or would accept the vampiric sacrament. Either way Djordje Kovačević would not succumb to his disease. But only if he was successful. As such Branko had raised hell brought attention and Samuel ad laid a swath a mile long through the city’s personnel. Each of the officers that would be straight shooters or competent had been detained. It was the wildest of times the city needed help.
Branko unknown to all but a very close few was the only recipient of a modern undying curse. Unlike vampirism he could not pass on the curse which had allowed him to die three times. Even transfusing his blood would not allow his curse to pass to another. As such he was faster stronger and altogether far more alive than he should have been. His brother Djordje however was dying faster and faster each day.
So for that reason he went along with Samuels ask unsure of what the old lion had in mind. Merely doing what was relayed to him via his ear piece. Staying just at the edge of the pursuit as all sorts of strange happenings went his way. Lights were green for him. Police were suddenly out of the path of his flight as he led a merry chase for the special team assigned to end his havoc.
The plan outside of minor tweaks was simple and had been laid out in the broad strokes. He was to keep them jumping and chasing until their leader the great and vaunted former Detective now Deputy Marshal Davis was the only person left giving chase.

Having no clue this was a set up as Samuel knew she would know a plant if she saw one unless he was really good at hiding it. This guy she wanted to catch especially as he put her on her butt. The pack of them chasing this guy probably looked ridiculous but what could you do. Someone should have probably radioed back positioned but he was so slippery they didn't want to lose sight.
Monica kept up with the other cops barely breaking a sweat and keeping in mind to not outpace too much, but after a bit, it was just her, bash and officer Bivens. The others were wheezing and calling for them to keep going. She frowned and motioned to Bash she would circle round to run him back towards them and got the nod. Ducking down a side block and then with no one to watch her put on a burst of speed.
It felt good to run full out and soon enough it was almost a high she skidded to a stop to look around and didn't see him. No way he got in front of them with her speed. So she crept back around the block but again didn't see him " what the hell?"
She whispered but decided to jog slowly back to retrace steps in case he cut down a different block. She was so focused on where he might have gone and not getting distracted by smells she didn't see him in the alley she almost passed as he reached out to grab her gun arm. Spinning her into his body in a bear hug and wrenching her wrist in a way that when it snapped it made her see spots. Hearing her gun hit the ground and she dropped holding her wrist and forearm to her body. He beat feet away but she was close to passing out from surprise and when bash found her he tsked and called for an ambulance. She was gritting her teeth and they called the chase off for the day with one officer hurt and the others left in the dust an APB would go out probably.
" He was.. in the alley.. I feel so stupid I should have cleared it"
Getting shoulder pats and grumbling as they rushed her to the Er for X-rays she managed to text Samuel with her other hand tho it was a bit clumsy."Think my wrist and probably part of my ulna broken on gun hand. To the ER bash with me"

Bhas had done his best to keep up but even as in shape as he was the perp and Davis were clearly better. He was able to keep the perp in sight even as the others of their team fell back establishing a cordon and radioing in for help. Davis however clearly took her cardio seriously. She was everything but winded even as she all but hummed with the excitement of the chase.
It was a sound plan but he had a bad feeling despite its tactical strength. He still felt horrible as he closed on Davis. She was down and the break looked bad. It looked like a very close to career ender. Torsion breaks were difficult to come back from. Sighing as he considered where they were there was only trauma center close enough and it was notoriously connected with certain organized crime heads. The staff was top-notch all rated very high in their fields and yet several Mafia bosses had been amongst the ranks of their VIP patients. Along with a veritable whose who of local celebrities. In short keeping this lowkey and off book was an impossibility.
Dialing it in was surprised with how quick the ambulance arrived. It was as if they were already on the way. Average time was right at the ten to twenty-minute window and usually closer to twenty in the city. They were on scene in six. Hi s concerns were assuaged some as they stated they’d been routed to the area twenty minutes ago for a MVcollision where the victim and driver eloped. Bhas helped her up and into the ambulance he thought of riding with but there was still a very violent perp in the wind. He knew that Davis would understand.

Monica had an oxygen mask over her face, and they were trying not to jostle her arm. They were trying to offer her pain meds but she kept shaking her head" I need to know what's going on I'm ok I've given birth"
She tried to keep it light and smile at them but they just shrugged and kept her calm till they pulled up in the Er and rushed her inside on the gurney. swapping her over to an exam bed and handing her over to the doctors. She sighed as they cut open her jacket arm instead of moving her arm. It was one of her nicer camel hair winter jackets, They took her phone someone had retrieved her gun probably bhas, it all went into a bag and under the bed as they wheeled her to x-ray.
She was worried that it had started healing wrong already knowing what she knew. When they put the vest on her belly and then snapped the shots it became very clear right away. Stress fracture diagonally along the middle of both the radius and ulna as well as a torsion break of the scaphoid and lunate bones. The peices were pretty much free floating in her wrist right at the moment of the x-ray.
She bit her lip softly as they wheeled her back to the room she was meant to be in while they set the bones and she asked if anyone had come to find her here. The nurse said she wold check.

It had taken serious mojo and a fair amount of effort but aside from the pain the job was done. She would be able to spend the next eight to twelve weeks free for f her responsibilities to the law. They could truly focus on her crash course for passing as non infected human. Which was just about the hardest con job ever pulled. It was being so attuned to the lie as to make it the truth.
And for her that would be the hardest part living a lie day and day out. The easiest thing would be to let the job go. But he wouldn’t ask that of her. Hence the most recent excessive spending and wool pulling. He gave them a few miles Kent’s to get her situated in her room. He spent a little extra to insure she was treated in the emergency room she had her own. Privacy was very important especially as even while faint there was alway a the iron scent of blood in the air.
Waiting until he thought she’d be settled he moved into her room a soft knock as slid the door open. “Good afternoon my lovely detective...”

The smell was an itch in her brain, bleach and blood. She also smelled fear, pain, and the shift nurse and the guy dropping off her pain meds had been intimate fairly recently.
The large club like cast that wrapped half her hand and up to just before her elbow was white with a pattern of blue paisley print wrap over it. She had frowned at the highlight pink and orange they had tried to talk her into. Currently her body was burning through the high grade pain killers they offered her.
Trying to find her zen when he knocked the feel of home despite his tight sheilds calmed her. Opening one eye she sighed" I messed up love. I let him get away and didnt clear the alley, such a rookie move"
As she still didn't think this was his doing be it naivete or biase Monica felt her mistake as if it really was her fault. Also despite knowing she'd heal there was a mild panic in her subconscious that she would never shoot as well again." Guess this solves what we were talking about huh?"
Trying to smile and look at the silver lining. Several moments or maybe more due to dozing off there was a breif officious knock. A man in a suit that smelled like burnt coffee and paper stuck his head in. Seeing she was decent" Marshal Davis my name is representative Dave Bridges local union rep for this area of law enforcement. Nice to meet you..and you sir are uh family?"
Not waiting to long he seemed a busy sort, dark hair starting to bald in back, fit enough but desk jocky softness at the middle with fashionable horn rimmed glasses." Bad deal you got injured just had a chat with the doc. Super tough break and the gun hand? tsk but your screen for lycanthtopy as standard on work related injuries came back clear as we expected so no issue there"
Monica with the aid of her drugs kept her face neutral and almost beaten which would be natural for this news. The man went on to have her sign her leave papers per the doctors estimate of healing time and the ones stating despite working when she was injured that she wouldn't sue. Once he got what he needed" you folks have a good evening get well quick marshal."
With actual finger gun on his way out. She waited till he was well away and snarled." Can we go home now please? I hate it here"
Trying to sound pitiful so he would be extra sweet to her tho he normally had that covered.

It wasn’t the most Herculean thing he had managed but it was very very close. He knew that as wrong as it would be he would break the Ukrainian. Yes wrong though it was he would uphold his end of the bargain and still find a way to twist things. Looking down on her he knew based on her rising beast that they had roughly two weeks roughly give or take a few hours before she healed in that time stretching and movement would be what she needed.
It would be hell. Twelve weeks of recuperation in two. It would not be an easy time especially come feeding time for Emme and Van. As well behaved as they were they definitely were territorial when it came to their time with their mother.
He eyed the beaurecrat as he laid it in thicker than needed. The man didn’t realize just who was offsetting his solid five figure salary. Petty minded though he was feeling Samuel was almost of a mind to curb some of the graft that lined George Mireauxs pockets. Luckily he was in and out his date that night with Miss Staten Island requiring him to freshen up apply his usual cloud of Mascolino and appease his wife by insuring their three kids were properly bribed with enough pocket money to impress their peers. Leaving her in their Staten Island agergetown with her three bottles of wine and handful of Vicodin.
“Yes let’s get going there is so much we need to talk about.”

Sliding off the bed to her feet and just a little wobbly she took the bottle of pills they had given her and took her gun and phone and frowned" ruined my jacket when they cut it off"
She wanted to be grumpy but was a little too high too. Knowing what she was having been paid off the script she had gotten could probably calm a horse down. Letting him sign her release papers from the hospital as the nurse gave him her care instructions like she was just a normal everyday person." don't get it wet no, lifting anything and don't let it get jostled to much" She couldnt get out of the hospital quick enough.
Finally in the back of the car with him abel driving she sagged" so what do we need to talk about?"

As they were discharged he did his best to not bite the nurses head off when she insisted they use the wheel chair. It was a ridiculous affectation from the days when the butchers in labcoats were considerably more indelicate with their scalpels and hospitals were places you went to die. No he wasn’t bitter about hospitals at all. " Gives us a reason to go shopping soon enough…" He said like the doting loving husband who’d been puled away from bringing the bacon to tend to his bad-ass wife who kicked down doors and took names.
Once they were out and safely in the car he waited until they were in motion to answer. “I’m sorry about your pain. And sorry for the increased pain you will have. There two ways we can increase your healing time. Both will cause you to do three weeks of healing far faster perhaps as little as a few days but both will cause more pain than you have experienced.” Tapping Abel and nodding as Abel shot a question back through the rearview mirror.
“ Your lioness is just below your skin has been for a few days now. So there are ways to call her forward. The other is well is me. I can bolster your healing but it will hurt as much maybe more because I need energy to do what is required and that usually comes in form of blood…"

Shopping sounded good and normal and she wanted that, as he got to the hard part she blinked and bit her lip softly" More pain then when he broke it?"
She didn't see how anything could hurt more than that had. Shuddering as she remembered the pain of it. Samuel tho never minced words about things like this so she would trust that he knew what he meant. She looked at him taking a breath and blowing it out" You know I don't want to be on pain pills and weak, I don't want to be helpless I hate that more than anything so what do we need to do ?"
Just like most anything else she was fierce and determined so, this would be no different and if she couldn't take the pain after the first day they could always fall back to plan b. The blood thing sounded a little weird but so was most of the things they were going through right now. When he mentioned the fact her lion was under her skin she paused to look. Sure enough, there was a regal slinking beauty with a pale almost white tawny coat and big floppy lioness feet.
The gold-green eyes blinked at Monica as she licked her muzzle and chuffed. Mostly unbothered despite the throb of the arm. Smirking she opened them" I see her, she's so beautiful do you see her?"
